Brandywine Overcomes Williamson In Final Non-Conference Test

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine trailed by five points at halftime, but outscored Williamson College of the Trades 42-22 over the final 20 minutes to claim a 72-57 victory on Tuesday night during the team's final non-league matchup of the season.

Pat Gallagher (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and Donte Winfield (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) and Isiah Cook (Reading, Pa./Reading) both followed with triples during a 12-4 Brandywine spurt that put the Lions in front 23-16 with 6:56 to go in the first half.

However, Williamson countered by scoring the next 16 points, holding Brandywine scoreless for a span of over four minutes, to vault in front by nine. Brandywine used a layup from Winfield and five throws to close within 35-30 at the half.

Brandywine took its first lead of the second half on Ameer Staggs' (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) bucket less than two minutes into the second half and moved the margin to 10 points as Winfield and Cook teamed to score 12-straight Brandywine points.

The Lions' lead dipped to seven points at the 5:06 mark, but Winfield and Terrence Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) each knocked down two free throws to balloon the margin back to 11 points. Brandywine held Williamson to one made basket over the final five minutes to secure the win.

Winfield topped four scorers in double figures for Brandywine with 18 points, while Cook added 17 points and four boards. Staggs produced a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double and Brown contributed 13 points, along with eight boards and three steals.

Quentin Beasley (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) collected seven rebounds, while Isaiah Lester (Morton, Pa./Ridley) totaled four assists and three steals.

Brandywine held Williamson to 22 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers. The Lions shot 36 percent from the field and knocked down eight triples.

Brandywine (12-6, 7-2 PSUAC) begins a two-game western Pennsylvania swing Friday at Penn State Fayette (8:00 pm).
