Eight Brandywine Student-Athletes Named To USCAA Spring National Academic Teams

MEDIA, Pa. -- A total of eight Penn State Brandywine student-athletes representing four spring sports were named to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Academic Team when the awards were announced recently.

Three members of the baseball team were honored in Sean Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), Tom Donahue (Ridley, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Nick Petrella (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), while a trio of Brandywine softball players also earned accolades: Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) andMaddie Malfara (Ardsley, Pa./Abington). Caleb Madison (Brookhaven, Pa./Delaware County Christian) represented the men's track and field team and Katie Corey (Lansdowne, Pa./Agora Cyber Charter) was selected from the women's tennis team.

The USCAA All-Academic Team is awarded to student-athletes who have accumulated a minimum GPA of 3.50 and reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution.

Sean Donahue, a communications major, owns a 3.79 grade-point average. He appeared in 37 games as the Lions' second baseman this spring, batting .290 with 19 runs batted in.

Tom Donahue made 34 appearances at the corner infield spots, collecting 38 hits, 33 runs scored and 15 stolen bases, while batting .393. Like his twin brother, Donahue is majoring in communications and has earned a 3.93 GPA.

Petrella, a mechanical engineering major, pitched in nine games, making six starts this spring. He earned two wins and struck out 33 batters over 38.2 innings on the mound.

Cherubini earned first team all-conference honors for the second-straight year after tallying 43 runs scored, 41 hits, 33 RBI and 11 stolen bases for Brandywine's PSUAC champion softball team. She owns a 3.88 GPA as a psychology major.

Grossi has amassed a 3.97 GPA as a human development and family studies major. She is a two-time all-PSUAC selection who collected 33 hits and 19 RBI this spring. On Thursday, she was selected to the USCAA World Series All-Tournament Team following her performance at the tournament.

Malfara graduated in early May with a degree in biology after logging a 3.84 GPA in four years at Brandywine. She claimed all-conference honors as a senior and completed her 146-game career with 110 hits, the fourth-highest total in team history.

Madison owns the top GPA of Brandywine's more than 170 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 mark following his sophomore year. This spring, Madison set a team record in the discus throw at the Moravian Invitational, while also competing in the shot put and javelin events for the Brandywine men's track team.

Corey finished her final season for the women's tennis squad by winning six matches, while serving primarily as the Lions' No. 2 singles player and on the top-flight doubles pairing. She recently graduated with a psychology degree after earning a 3.85 GPA.

A total of 17 student-athletes from Penn State Brandywine were named to USCAA National Academic Teams during the 2018-19 academic year.
