Junior gurard Rasheed Wilkins scored 33 points on 12-22 shooting but Westfield State University men's basketball team was able to hold off Penn State Brandywine, 69-64, in the opening round of the Battle by the Bridge at Rutgers-Camden.
Brandywine, which trailed by six points at halftime, surged into a second-half lead late in the game behind 18 of the game-high 33 points from junior guard Rasheed Wilkins (Philadelphia, PA/New Media Tech). The Nittany Lions tied the contest at 54-54 on a jumper by freshman Frank McCusker (Garnet Valley, PA/Salesianum) and took a 56-54 advantage on a pair of foul shots by Wilkins.
However leading at 63-62, the Nittany Lions saw Lee Vazquez of the Westfield State Owls put his team ahead for good on a three-pointer in the last minute. He added a pair of foul shots down the stretch as the Owls won their opening game.
For the game, Penn State-Brandywine received nine points from freshman Patrick McGee (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown), in addition to the 33 points from Wilkins.
