Abbonizio And Iannello Claim PSUAC Women’s Soccer Weekly Awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania -- For the first time, Penn State Brandywine women's soccer players have earned weekly awards from the PSUAC as Ami Iannello (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) was named offensive player of the week and Alyssa Abbonizio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) took home goalkeeper of the week honors.

Iannello scored the game-winning goal during Brandywine's 1-0 victory over Penn State Schuylkill, while Abbonizio stopped all three shots she faced to record the shutout, the first in program history. Abbonizio also did not allow a goal in 70-plus minutes of work during the Lions' 3-1 triumph over Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday.

Iannello's goal, which came during the 85th minute when she sent a free kick into the top corner of the net, was her second of the season. Abbonizio increased her save percentage to .667 after blocking all seven shots she faced last week and improved to 3-1 in net during  four starts this fall.

Brandywine, playing its first season as a varsity team, is off to a 3-1 start in conference play and sits atop the PSUAC standings. The Lions travel to Rosemont Saturday afternoon for their first non-league contest of the year.
