Abington Holds Off Brandywine 65-64
MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine drained what appeared to be a game-tying shot at the buzzer, but officials deemed Amari Little's (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) heave a two-point shot as the Lions' furious second-half comeback fell one point short in a 65-64 loss to Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon.
Brandywine trailed by as many as 16 points with 15:57 to go, but Little and the three-point shooting of Jack Swider (Conshohocken, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) and Jamar Wright (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science) fueled the Lions' rally. Swider buried all four of his three-point attempts during the final 20 minutesand Wright notched three shots from beyond the arc, while Little netted 11 second-half points.
Swider's triple brought Brandywine within 11 at the 13:16 and two minutes later, Little canned a three that made the score 49-40. He converted a three-point play during the Lions' next possession to bring the deficit to six.
Two triples from Swider and one from Wright during the next six minutes again brought Brandywine within six before another Wright trifecta at the 2:26 mark trimmed the margin to four.
After an Abington free throw, Jaden Fogg's (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) tip-in put the count at 62-59 with 1:18 to go. The visitors knocked down a pair of free throws to lead by five with under 10 seconds remaining, but Little was fouled while shooting a three-pointer and knocked down all three ensuing free throws.
Following an Abington missed free throw and Brandywine trailing 65-62, Little buried a running jumper at the buzzer that appeared to send the game to overtime, but after a discussion, the officiating crew deemed the shot to be a two-pointer, ending the Lions' comeback bid.
Swider knocked down six threes and led Brandywine with 20 points, while Little added 13 points. Fogg notched 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Wright delivered 11 points and six boards.
Brandywine shot 7-of-15 from beyond the arc in the second half after misfiring on 15-of-18 triples during the opening 20 minutes. The Lions were limited to 31 percent shooting, while Abington made 46 percent of its shots from the floor.
Brandywine (3-12, 0-6 UEC) will visit Wilson College on Tuesday night for a 7:30 PM game.
