Cairn Edges Brandywine In Double-Overtime Season Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- A putback layup with 10 seconds to play was the difference as Cairn and Penn State Brandywine battled for 50 minutes in the men's basketball season opener for both teams Friday night with the Highlanders clipping the Lions by a final score of 93-92 in double overtime.

Brandywine held a 92-88 edge following a pair of free throws from Corwin Holland II with 24 seconds left in the second overtime period, but Cairn buried a triple to get within one. Following a Brandywine turnover, Byron Haskins missed a layup, but Corey Baldwin was there to clean up the rebound, tipping in the game-winning shot.

The Lions scored the final four points of the first half, including a layup from Jaden Fogg (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) that beat the buzzer, to send Brandywine into intermission with a 35-32 edge.

Brandywine extended its margin as large as 11 points when Ja'bri White (Townsend, Del./St. Mark's) sank a layup with 16:35 to go in the second period; however, the Highlanders quickly answered, scoring the next 12 points to vault back in front.

The teams battled back and forth for the final 10 minutes of the second period with neither team leading by more than four points. Brandywine overcame a late three-point deficit by sinking four free throws during the final 15 seconds. Amari Little (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) knocked down a pair to get the Lions within one and after Cairn knocked down one-of-two from the free throw stripe, Fogg stepped to the line and sank a pair of clutch free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Cairn scored the final four points of the first overtime during the final 1:14 to extend the game for five more minutes. In the second overtime session, Holland netted a pair of free throws, Damir Shelley (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) canned a jumper and Fogg added two free throws as Brandywine opened up an 88-82 edge. Cairn answered with back-to-back buckets and later tied the score thanks to a pair of free throws from Jaylon Simpson with 61 ticks on the clock. A combined four free throws from Little and Holland put the Lions back on top before Cairn answered with the night's final five points.

Holland led all scorers with 27 points, 13 of which came at the free throw line, and grabbed a team-high nine boards. Little and Fogg both notched 16 points, while Jack Swider (Conshohocken, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) added 11 points and six boards.

Brandywine sank 34 free throws, compared to just 16 for Cairn, but the Lions were limited to 4-of-28 shooting from beyond the arc and were outrebounded 54-44.

Brandywine (0-1) will look to bounce back Saturday when the Lions visit Penn State Hazleton at 3:00 PM.
