Brandywine Rolls Past Delaware Valley 10-3

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team closed out its season-opening, five-game home stand by rolling to a 10-3 victory over Delaware Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

Brandywine collected a season-high 14 hits led by a three-hit effort from David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken). Kursman also scored three runs, while Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) both collected two hits and two runs scored. Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) drove in a team-high four runs and tallied a pair of knocks.

Brandywine answered DelVal's two-run first inning with a three spot during the bottom of the frame. Brown got a one-out rally started with a base hit and advanced to second on Kursman's single two batters later. DeGirolamo loaded the bases with a single and Lawton worked a walk to force in the Lions' first run. Jamey Massung (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) added an infield single to tie the score and an Aggie error allowed the Lions to jump in front.

After the Aggies knotted the count at 3-3, Brandywine scored twice in the third to take the lead for good. Kursman led off with a base hit and moved to third when DeGirolamo doubled. Lawton plated Kursman with a sacrifice fly, while Ivano Romaniello (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored DeGirolamo with a single.

Brandywine tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth. Brown and Nate Turner (Dover, Del./Dover) tallied consecutive run-scoring knocks and Lawton added a RBI single to left field. Evan Shade's (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) bases-loaded walk forced in Turner to make the score 9-3.

Kursman doubled with one out in the eighth and crossed home via Lawton's two-base hit to provide the final margin.

Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) worked the first five innings on the mound to earn his first victory of the spring. Skeans fanned five hitters, while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits. Nick Gordon (Chester Heights, Pa./Garnet Valley) struck out two and did not allow a run during 3.0 innings of relief, while Nate Romberger (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen School) fired a scoreless ninth inning.

Brandywine (2-3) hits the road for the first time this spring on Saturday to take on Marywood at 1:00 PM.
