Brandywine Tops Penn College 7-3
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine picked up a United East Conference baseball victory by a score of 7-3 over Penn College in a makeup contest following a weekend rainout on Monday afternoon.
After Penn College edged the Lions 19-18 in a slugfest in game one of what was supposed to be a doubleheader on Saturday, three Brandywine pitchers combined to allow just six hits and one earned run on Monday.
Nick Gordon (Chester Heights, Pa./Garnet Valley) worked the first five innings to earn his first win of the season. He recorded five strikeouts, while yielding three runs (one earned) on six hits. Liam Nugent (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and Gianni Serenelli (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) combined to toss four no-hit innings in relief. Both relievers collected a pair of strikeouts in 2.0 innings on the mound.
Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) spotted the Lions with a 2-0 lead in the first inning as he blasted his second home run of the spring, a two-out, two-run shot that cleared the left field fence.
Penn College tied the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third, but Brandywine took the lead for good two frames later. Two walks and a Penn College error loaded the bases to help start the Lions' four-run rally. Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) scored Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) with a sacrifice fly, while Daniel Rohlsen (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) crossed home via wild pitch. Lawton pushed two more runs across the plate with a base hit through the right side of the infield.
The hosts got a run back in the sixth before Skeans' base hit scored Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) with Brandywine's final run of the day during the seventh inning.
Lawton collected two hits and four RBI, while Snyder notched a pair of knocks, scored three runs and stole two bases to pace the Brandywine offense.
Brandywine will play on the road for the final time this spring Tuesday at Valley Forge beginning at 3:00 PM.
