Serenelli’s Shutout Sends Brandywine To First United East Triumph

ASTON, Pa. -- Gianni Serenelli (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) fired a complete-game shutout to lead the Penn State Brandywine baseball team to a United East Conference victory for the first time as the Lions cruised to a 9-0 triumph over Penn State Abington on Tuesday afternoon.

Serenelli went the distance to earn his first victory. He struck out five Abington batters, while allowing six hits, five of which were singles. Just four runners reached scoring position against Serenelli, but he was aided by his defense, which produced three double plays, including an outfield assist from David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken), who threw out a runner at the plate to end the sixth inning.

Brandywine gave Serenelli all the runs he would need in the second inning, scoring six times on five hits. After Toby Skeans (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) pushed two more runs across with a double. Daniel Horowitz (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) tallied consecutive run-scoring singles, while Horowitz crossed home on Owen Lawton's (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) groundout.

The score remained 6-0 until the seventh inning when Brandywine struck for three more runs. Snyder walked, stole second and scored when Lawton tripled into the right-field corner. Nate Turner's (Dover, Del./Dover) base hit allowed Lawton to score and three batters later, Kursman drove in Turner with a single.

Eight of Brandywine's nine batters in the lineup collected at least one hit and all nine scored a run. Turner was 3-for-4 ate the plate, while Kursman and Rodriguez both tallied two hits.

Brandywine is on the road Saturday at Penn State Berks for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
