Brandywine Falls On Senior Night

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team was downed by the University of Valley Forge by a 15-8 score on Senior Night Tuesday night. The Lions honored their eight-player senior class prior to first pitch.

Brandywine overcame an early 3-0 deficit by scoring a run in the second on senior Shawn Webb's (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) sacrifice fly before adding five third-inning markers.

Ryan Brown's (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) two-out single scored senior Nate Turner (Dover, Del./Dover) to bring the count to 3-2. After senior Jimmy Carey's (Springfield, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) base hit loaded the bases, classmate Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) was hit by a pitch to force in the game-tying run. A walk to Webb put the Lions in the lead and Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) tacked on a two-run single to put the Lions on top 6-3.

Valley Forge struck for four runs in the fourth and added two more scores in the fifth to lead 9-6. Daniel Rohlsen's (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) two-out, two-run triple plated Brown and Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) as the Lions trimmed the margin to 9-8 after six innings, but that is as close as Brandywine would get. The Patriots tacked on an insurance run in the eighth before pulling away in the ninth inning.

Brown led the way at the plate for Brandywine with three hits in five at-bats. He also scored three runs, while Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) collected two knocks. Rohlsen and Webb both recorded two RBI and DeGirolamo crossed home twice.

Gianni Serenelli (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic), who was named United East Conference Pitcher of the Week last week, struck out four and allowed seven runs (four earned) in three-plus innings and suffered the loss.

Brandywine's eight seniors honored included Webb, Turner, Carey, Shade, Malik Blue (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wesley Chapel), Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East), Justin Bray (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East)

Brandywine visits Penn College for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM.
