Bussenger, Hurta Reach Milestones In Sweep

MEDIA, Pa. -- Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) recorded the 200th hit of her career, while Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) tallied the 100th strikeout of her career as the Penn State Brandywine softball team swept a doubleheader at Washington College by scores of 11-2 and 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 11, Washington College 2

Brandywine did all of its scoring during the third and sixth innings as the Lions romped to a run-rule victory to open the day.

Bussenger singled, Emma McElroy (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) was hit by a pitch and Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) walked to load the bases with no outs in the third inning. Ava Craddock (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) delivered the first of three consecutive hits for the Lions, scoring Bussenger and McElroy with a single. Ava Rodgers (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) followed with a base hit and Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added Brandywine's third run-scoring knock of the inning to make the count 4-0. Olivia Bowers (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) scored Rodgers with a sacrifice fly for the Lions' fifth run.

Six more runs came around to score as Brandywine put the game away in the sixth inning. McElroy and Mushinski combined to drive in three runs with back-to-back doubles, while Culbertson launched a three-run home run over the left-center field fence to cap the Lions' scoring.

Culbertson paced the Lions at the plate with three hits and four RBI, while McElroy and Mushinski both tallied two hits and scored twice. McElroy also drove in two runs and stole a pair of bases.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) evened her record at 2-2 this spring after pitching all six innings in the circle. She struck out eight and did not yield an earned run, while limiting the Shorewomen to three hits.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, Washington College 2

Needing one hit to reach 200 for her career, Bussenger wasted no time as she led off game two with a bloop single through the middle. She is the just the third player in the 13-year history of the program to tally 200 or more hits.

A third-inning strikeout was Hurta's third of the day and 100th of her career as she became the fifth Lion to reach triple digits in strikeouts. Hurta finished the day with four strikeouts in six innings to claim her third victory of the spring.

Mushinski's first-inning sacrifice fly gave the Lions a 1-0 lead before Brandywine exploded for six more runs in the third. Mushinski tacked on a two-run single and later stole home, while Craddock drove in McElroy with a base hit and Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) knocked in a pair of runs with a base hit.

Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) recorded her first home run of the spring, a solo shot in the fourth, to complete the Brandywine scoring.

Bussenger and McElroy both tallied two knocks, while Mushinski collected three RBI. Bussenger also stole a base and scored a run and McElroy crossed home twice.

Brandywine (6-6) is back on the road Tuesday at Franklin & Marshall beginning at 3:00 PM.
