Brandywine Falls At Gwynedd Mercy In Division III Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine dropped its women's soccer season opener at Gwynedd Mercy University by an 8-0 count on Friday afternoon during the season opener for both teams.

The match marked the first-ever contest as a member of NCAA Division III for Brandywine, which joined the United East Conference this fall, as well as the debut of first-year Head Coach Alex Nestor.

Taylor Mims (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) stopped 17 shots in goal, fifth-most in single-game team history, while playing the first 62-plus minutes. Emily Orr (Eddystone, Pa./Ridley) relieved Mims during the 63rd minute and blocked four shots the rest of the way.

The Griffins scored three times during the opening 20 minutes and added a fourth first-half goal with 15 seconds remaining the period. Gwynedd Mercy tacked on four more second-half tallies.

Brandywine is idle until Sept. 11 when the Lions open the home portion of their schedule against former conference foe, Penn State Schuylkill, at 4:00 PM.
