Brandywine Sweeps United East Women’s Soccer Weekly Awards

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine claimed both United East Conference women's soccer weekly awards on Monday as freshman Jasmin Alvarez (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) was named Defender of the Week and classmate Emma Kearns (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week.

Alvarez went 2-0 with 12 saves and a .923 save percentage in goal last week, while Kearns netted a goal in each game for the Lions.

Tuesday at Valley Forge, Alvarez stopped the lone shot she faced to record the first shutout victory of her career. Kearns netted Brandywine's first of four goals for the first marker of her collegiate career in the 4-0 win over the Patriots.

Four days later, Kearns found the back of the net for the second time, scoring the game-winning goal in Brandywine's 2-1 home triumph over Pratt. She outraced a Pratt defender for the ball and lofted a shot over the Cannoneers' goalkeeper, giving Brandywine the lead during the 81st minute. Alvarez was tested throughout the match, stopping 11 of the 12 shots she faced. Her final test came during the match's final 10 seconds as she needed to knock down a shot to preserve the Lions' lead.

Alvarez owns a 2-1 record with 27 saves and a conference-leading .900 save percentage, while Kearns has scored a pair of goals and leads the Lions with 11 shots on target through three games.

Brandywine looks for its third-straight win Wednesday when the Lions visit Brooklyn College at 6:00 PM.
