Brandywine Outlasts DelVal In Four-Set Triumph

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine evened its record at 2-2 following a four-set (25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14), non-conference volleyball triumph over Delaware Valley on Tuesday night.

Lara Zima (Hollywood, Fla./Westminster Academy) led the Lions with her second triple double of the season, recording 11 kills, 18 assists and 13 digs, along with five aces. Zima, the only Brandywine volleyball player with a triple double since 2014, is one of five NCAA Division III players with multiple triple-doubles this fall.

Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added nine kills, 11 digs and four aces, while Shayla Howell (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) contributed eight kills, 12 assists and seven digs. Ava De La Osa (Dania Beach, Fla./Nova) led the defense with 15 digs.

Tied 11-11 during the first set, Brandywine took control by reeling off seven-straight points. O'Reilly notched three kills, Zima tallied two aces and Rachel Nice (Feasterville, Pa./St. Hubert's) added a kill to spur the run. The Aggies closed within one late in the frame, but a DelVal error and a kill from Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) gave the first set to Brandywine.

Neither side led by more than three points during a tightly-contested second set. The teams were all square at 23-23, but a pair of Brandywine miscues helped DelVal even the match.

Brandywine trailed the third frame 14-13 before ripping off 11 of the final 13 points. Howell fueled the run with three kills, while Zima set down two aces as the Lions took a 2-1 edge in the match.

The Lions built a 9-4 edge early during set No. 4, but DelVal rallied to tie the count at 10-all. Aided by six Aggie errors, Brandywine answered with eight of the next nine points and later put the match away behind kills from Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) and Zima.

Brandywine visits Centenary Thursday for its first road match of the season beginning at 7:00 PM.
