Brandywine Sweeps Through Berks 3-0

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team won for the fourth time in five United East Conference matches, besting Penn State Berks in three sets (26-24, 25-13, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine trailed for much of the opening set, but rallied late to claim the frame. Down 20-16, Nia Moore (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) recorded back-to-back kills and Berks followed with an error to draw the Lions within one. Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) later tied the count at 21-all with an ace, but Berks answered with the next two points. Following a Brandywine timeout, a Berks miscue, an ace from Aaliyna Patel (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and a kill from Morgan Rizer (Denton, Md./North Caroline) gave Brandywine a one-point edge. The visitors tied the count at 24-24, but consecutive kills from Rizer and Shayla Howell (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) gave the first set to Brandywine.

The Lions dominated the second set, jumping out to a 12-3 lead, before extending the margin to 18-5 following kills from O'Reilly and Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy). The Lions did not let their lead dip lower than 10 points as Brandywine ran away with a 25-13 second set.

Berks led the final set 9-4, but kills from Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex), Moore and Patel spurred a 9-1 Brandwine run that put the Lions in front, 13-10. After Berks rallied to take a one-point edge, kills from O'Reilly and Piccirillo sandwiched a pair of aces by Howell to help Brandywine regain the lead. Berks later trimmed a four-point deficit to just one, but an error allowed Brandywine to complete the sweep.

Piccirillo collected a team-high nine kills, while Moore and Rizer both posted seven and O'Reilly and Molinaro each tallied six. Howell handed out 25 assists and topped the team with four aces. Rizer and O'Reilly each recorded three aces.

Patel paced the defense with 14 digs and O'Reilly added 13, while Howell had eight digs and Rizer notched two blocks.

Brandywine (10-7, 4-1 UEC) will play three-straight matches on the road beginning Tuesday at Cairn (7:00 PM).
