Kemp Sinks Game-Winner As Brandywine Wins Home Opener
MEDIA, Pa. – Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) broke a 51-all tie by sinking a layup with 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation as the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team topped Penn State York 53-51 during its home opener on Tuesday night.
Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) found Kemp wide open under the basket for a layup during the Lions' penultimate possession after York had tied the count, scoring a bucket with 20 seconds left. York had two possessions during the final three seconds, but a three-pointer was off the mark and the visitors ran out of time during their final possession.
The game was tightly-contested throughout, featuring six tied scores and 11 lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points during the final 17 minutes of regulation.
Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) paced the Lions with an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double. Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) tallied 10 points, while Kemp and Allen both notched eight points. Allen also grabbed six boards and handed out four assists.
Three different scorers contributed to an early 7-0 run for the Lions, who expanded their lead to eight points when Watson sank a pair of free throws at the 1:13 mark of the first quarter. York netted the final two baskets of the period to climb within four and continued its run into the second period, scoring the first five points to grab a one-point edge.
Neither team held a lead larger than two points until the final minute of the half when Allen buried a triple and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) canned a jumper to give Brandywine a 26-23 edge at the break.
Watson opened the second half with a basket, extending the Lions' lead to five, but York steadily chipped away, outscoring Brandywine 7-1 during the next five minutes to go back in front. Allen and Diawara combined for seven of Brandywine's final 10 points during the third quarter and a Watson free throw with 21 seconds left sent Brandywine into the final stanza with a 39-37 edge.
The visitors vaulted back in front with five-straight points to start the fourth quarter. York held a 46-42 lead four minutes later before Watson netted back-to-back layups and scored six points overall during a 7-0 Brandywine run that put the Lions in front 49-46.
York battled back to tie the score with under one minute to go before Kemp delivered the game-winning layup.
Brandywine limited York to 29 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers.
Brandywine (1-1) will continue its three-game home stand Thursday against Bryn Mawr at 7:00 PM.
