Late Surge Sends Penn College To Victory Over Brandywine
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Penn College outscored Penn State Brandywine 23-11 during the fourth quarter to erase a double-figure deficit and defeat the Lions' women's basketball team 62-56 on Saturday afternoon.
Brandywine stormed back from a double-digit deficit of its own during the final 5:31 of the opening half to claim a 30-25 edge at intermission. Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) buried four three-pointers, while Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) tallied a pair of buckets and Taylor Mims (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) sank a layup as the Lions outscored the Wildcats 18-3 to build a five-point halftime lead.
A three-point play from Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) increased the Lions' edge to double figures for the first time early in the second half. Later in the third quarter, Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) notched back-to-back baskets to give Brandywine its biggest lead of the afternoon at 45-31 with 3:10 on the clock.
Penn College was within six after three quarters and got within two following six-straight points just before the halfway point of the final period.
Diawara buried her sixth triple of the game to increase the Lions' lead to 54-49 with 4:12 to go, but the Wildcats outscored Brandywine 13-2 the rest of the way to claim the victory. Penn College secured the win by making all five of its free throws during the final 55 seconds.
Diawara poured in a team-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes. Watson added 12 points and five boards, while Koger tallied eight points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Brandywine (1-13, 0-6 UEC) will close out its three-game road trip Tuesday at Wilson College (5:00 PM).
