Miscues Cost Lions In 14-8 Setback

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Six Penn State Brandywine errors led to a pair of five-run innings as the Lions were defeated 14-8 by Albertus Magnus on Wednesday afternoon at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational.

Thanks to six walks, three wild pitches and a passed ball, Brandywine put four runs on the board without needing a hit during the second inning, building a 4-0 lead.

The Falcons plated single runs in the third and fourth innings before taking the lead for good with five markers in the fifth and two more one frame later.

Brandywine trimmed the deficit to two runs on a pair of occasions. First, Jason Hankins (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) tripled and scored on Miguel Rodriguez's (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) groundout in the fifth. Two innings later, Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) capped a two-out rally with a two-run single to make the count 9-7, but Albertus Magnus tacked on five insurance runs in the eighth inning.

Eight Lions recorded a hit, while Hankins and Ryan Koman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) both crossed home twice. Jackson Messick (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) got the start on the mound and struck out three, while allowing two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings. Jack Johnston (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) highlighted four Brandywine relievers by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Brandywine (4-5) closes out its Spring Break trip Thursday with a doubleheader against Dominican (Ill.) beginning at 9:45 AM.
