Gallaudet Edges Brandywine In United East Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Gallaudet in the United East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

A defensive miscommunication allowed the Bison to get on the board first as Matteo Giansanti found the back of the net during the 10th minute.

The score remained the same until Brandywine netted the equalizer at the 68:39 mark. Antonio Marcelo (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) sent Derek Lopez (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) in on goal with a pass through the middle and Lopez deposited the first marker of his career.

The Lions and Bison were square for just six minutes as Gallaudet netted the game-winning goal with a header from Xavier Deleon off a corner.

Brandywine had plenty of opportunties to produce more offense during the game, but a penalty kick in the seventh minute whistled well high and Ethan Faulkner's (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) shot late in the second half was turned aside on the doorstep.

Brandywine goalkeeper Braden Warwick (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) stopped two shots, while Marcelo, Jackson Gamber (Millville, N.J./Millville) and Robbie Warren (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) all tallied two shots for the Lions.

Brandywine (1-8) visits St. Mary's of Maryland Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
