Brandywine Extends Winning Streak To Seven-Straight

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine softball team pushed its winning streak to seven consecutive games following a United East Conference doubleheader sweep of Rosemont on Tuesday. The Lions won by scores of 11-5 and 5-1.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 11, Rosemont 5

Brandywine had to outslug Rosemont to win game one, collecting 13 hits in an 11-5 victory.

The Lions scored three runs during each of their first three at-bats, building a 9-3 edge through three innings.

Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored via throwing error to get the scoring started in the first inning. After a base hit from Emma McElroy (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) and a walk issued to Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia), Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) delivered a two-out, two-run single to up the margin to 3-0.

Bussenger got another rally started in the second, singling to lead off before swiping second. She came around to score on Kaylee Mushinski's (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) triple. Mushinski later scored on an error before Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) added a two-out RBI single.

McElroy was responsible for all three third-inning runs as she blasted a three-run home run, the first of her career, over the center field fence.

The Ravens climbed within four thanks to a pair of fifth-inning runs, but the Lions added a pair of insurance markers. McElroy singled and scored on Mushinski's double in the fifth, while Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) drove in Culbertson with a base hit one frame later.

Eight of Brandywine's nine batters tallied a hit, including a 3-for-4 performance from McElroy. Bussenger, Mushinski and Culbertson all tallied two hits. McElroy and Bussenger both came around to score three times, while Bussenger stole three bases.

April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) worked around five earned runs on seven hits to record her ninth victory of the season. She set a season-high with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) fired two scoreless frames in relief, striking out three.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 5, Rosemont 1

Brandywine completed its third-straight United East sweep by claiming the nightcap by a 5-1 count.

Ava Craddock (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was 3-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run triple that opened the scoring in the third inning.

Bussenger added two more hits, two stolen bases and an RBI, while McElroy and Mushinski both tallied one hit each.

Kylie Ferris (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney) worked the first five innings in the circle, limiting Rosemont to one run on eight hits, while striking out one as she upped her record to 2-0. Hurta came on in relief for the second-straight game and recorded the save after tallying two strikeouts over the final two innings.

Brandywine held a 2-1 edge entering the bottom of the fifth and extended its lead to two when Bussenger manufactured a run. She singled, stole second and later scored via passed ball. The Lions tacked on two more scores one inning later as DuBois lifted a sacrifice fly that allowed Culbertson to cross home and Bussenger collected a run-scoring single.

Brandywine (17-5, 6-0 UEC) will be back at Maple Zone Wednesday for a non-conference twin bill against Washington College beginning at 4:00 PM.
