Brandywine Bats Stay Hot; Lions Knock Off Wilson

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine offense continued to click as the Lions piled up 15 runs on 26 hits and swept a United East Conference softball doubleheader from Wilson on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions won the opener 7-5 and claimed the nightcap by an 8-1 score.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 7, Wilson 5

Brandywine built a 7-1 lead through four innings and had to hold on for the 7-5 victory.

Ava Craddock (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was 4-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in and a run scored, while Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) collected three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Quinn Rosario (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also produced a three-hit game and Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) recorded two RBI. Brandywine tallied 15 hits overall against a pair of Wilson pitchers.

Mushinski started a two-out rally with a base hit and came around to score on Craddock's double to give the Lions a 1-0 lead through one inning.

The duo of Mushinski and Craddock notched back-to-back base hits and both crossed home when DeCillis doubled into the left-center field gap two innings later to up the margin to 3-0.

The Phoenix got on the board for the first time in the fourth with a single run, but Brandywine struck for four markers during the bottom of the frame. Rosario led off with a triple and scored on Gigi Duca's (Bear, Del./Smyrna) base hit. Three batters later, Mushinski cracked her second long ball of the season, a three-run shot, to up the margin to 7-1.

Wilson scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but could get no closer against Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury). DeFazio recorded the final two outs of the sixth inning and retired the side in order in the seventh to registered her league-high third save in relief of April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton). Lewandowski worked the first 5.1 frames, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out three to earn her 12th victory.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, Wilson 1

Brandywine ran away with game two, slugging its way to the doubleheader sweep behind five extra-base hits.

Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) fell a triple shy of the cycle in three at-bats, while DeCillis added two hits and two more RBI. Craddock scored two runs and Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) tallied a single and stole three bases.

Brandywine trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, but evened the count when Craddock and DeCillis produced back-to-back doubles.

Mushinski's RBI single in the third gave Brandywine the lead. The Lions tacked on three more runs during the frame as DeCillis lifted a sacrifice fly to left field and DuBois and Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) recorded consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles.

DeCillis singled and Culbertson walked with one out in the fifth and DuBois brought them both home with her first college home run, a long shot over the left-center field fence.

Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Regional) went the distance for the seventh time this spring to up her record to 7-3. Hurta held Wilson to just one run on three hits, while striking out four in seven innings.

Brandywine (23-7, 9-1 UEC) plays its final conference road games of the spring on Saturday when the Lions visit Penn State Abington for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
