MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's tennis team defeated Penn College for the second-straight year by a 4-3 count, while the Penn College men topped Brandywine 7-0 in United East Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Brandywine women claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches, including a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak victory at No. 1 from Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Mari Gvelesiani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton).
Zahran cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 No. 1 singles triumph, while Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) also won in straight sets to earn a singles point for the Lions. Piccirillo claimed fifth-flight win by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) won via forfeit at No. 6 singles to secure the overall match victory for Brandywine.
For the Brandywine men, Mateo Torres (Chichester, Pa./Chichester), Zairus Silverio (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and Von Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory) all won five games during their respective singles bouts. Each dropped a 2-6, 3-6 decision in straight sets.
The Brandywine women host Notre Dame of Maryland on Friday at 3:00 PM, while the men are back at home Saturday for the final home match of the year against Penn State Abington beginning at 1:00 PM.
