Brandywine Tops Cedar Crest For First United East Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's tennis team recorded its first United East Conference victory of the season, defeating Cedar Crest by a 6-1 count on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Brandywine swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Sydney Mabry (Washington, D.C./Jackson-Reed) combined for a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Natalie DiMario (Clifton Heights, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Mari Gvelesiani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) teamed to win by the same count during their second-flight match.
 
The Lions secured the match victory by claiming five of the six singles bouts, including four in straight sets.
 
Zahran cruised at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Gvelesiani rallied after dropping the opening frame to win in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while Mabry outlasted the Falcons' Grace Huff 7-5, 7-6 at No. 3.
 
Sofia Guzman (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Berchmans) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner during her fourth-flight bout and DiMario claimed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 5.
 
Brandywine (3-4, 1-1 UEC) wraps up a three-match home stand Saturday when the Lions host Penn State Berks at 1:00 PM.
