MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's soccer team claimed victory during its home-opening match, topping Penn State York 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The win marked the first in the career of first-year Head Coach Bill Walleekendeh.
Christian Zavala (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) accounted for two of Brandywine's goals, while Dakari Burton (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) netted the Lions' third goal late in the second half.
Both of Zavala's markers came via penalty kick. Following a hand ball assessed in the box against York, Zavala drove the match's first goal into the lower left corner of the net with 2:09 to play in the opening half. After Francis Sarpong (Germantown, Md./Northwest) was upended in the penalty area, Zavala added a second strike, this one coming at the 54:53 mark.
Burton made the count 3-0 as he headed in a corner kick off the foot of Ceasar Ugwuanyi (Folcroft, Pa./Academy Park) with less than one minute remaining in regulaion.
The Lions dominated the pace of play, collecting 30 shots, compared to just two for the visitors. Brandywine put 12 shots on target, while Elijah DeBooth (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) needed to make one save to record his first shutout victory of the season.
Brandywine (1-0-1) returns home Saturday for a 1:00 PM match against SUNY ESF.
