WASHINGTON, D.C. – Penn State Brandywine netted three goals during the final 45 minutes and scored its first-ever United East Conference men's soccer victory, defeating Gallaudet 3-1, late Wednesday night.
Despite piling up seven shots on goal, plus a header from Ray Kelly (Middletown, Del./Middletown) that hit the post and a Kyle Reuter (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) free kick that rang off the cross bar, the Lions and Bison entered halftime even at 0-0.
During the 59th minute, Reuter put Brandywine on top, scoring for the second time this fall. His long strike from 20 yards out found the right corner of the net for a 1-0 Brandywine lead.
Gallaudet tied the count at the 71:47 mark, but the Lions took less than two minutes to go back on top. Lukas Garthwait (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) forced a turnover deep in Gallaudet territory and a Bison defender attempting to clear the ball drove it into the back of the net just 103 second after Gallaudet had knotted the score.
Brandywine added an insurance marker with fewer than six minutes to go in regulation. Garthwait's cross found Francis Sarpong (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and Sarpong deposited his fifth goal of the fall, tying him for the team lead.
The Lions dominated possession of the ball, accumulating 29 shots, 12 of which were on target, and attempted all eight of the match's corner kicks. Elijah DeBooth (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) played all 90 minutes in net, needing just one save to earn his fourth win of the season.
Brandywine (4-7-3, 1-4 United East) will host Senior Day on Saturday when the Lions face Bryn Athyn at 1:00 PM.
