COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine overcame one two-goal deficit, but could not rally from a second as the Lions' men's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision at Ursinus on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears scored twice during the first 28:10 of the match to build a 2-0 edge, but Francis Sarpong (Germantown, Md./Northwest) trimmed the margin in half, answering Ursinus' second marker with a goal just 21 seconds later. Sarpong collected a crossing feed from Junior Gboho (Philadelphia, Pa./Horace Furness) and tapped in his first goal of the season.
The score remained 2-1 until Sarpong struck again during the 52nd minute. His cross deflected off a pair of Ursinus defenders and over the outstretched arms of Bears' keeper Zach Matik to knot the count at 2-2.
Ursinus went back on top at the 73:42 mark; however, Brandywine had another quick response. Christian Zavala's (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) free kick was tapped on by Ceasar Ugwuanyi (Folcroft, Pa./Academy Park) and found the foot of Gboho, whose strike reached the bottom of the cage 77 seconds later.
The score stayed tied at 3-all for just 91 seconds as Marco Balic netted the go-ahead goal for Ursinus. The Bears tacked on an insurance marker during the 82nd minute.
Will Manarpaac (Boerne, Texas/Samuel V. Champion) made six saves in net for Brandywine, but took the loss, his first of the season. Robbie Warren (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) recorded three of the Lions' seven shots on goal.
Brandywine (1-2-2) rounds out its three-game road trip Tuesday at Notre Dame of Maryland University at 4:00 PM.
