Brandywine Opens 2026 With First Win

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team opened the new calendar year with its first United East Conference victory, topping Penn State Berks 57-46 on Saturday afternoon.

Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Ashley Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) combined for the Lions' first 12 points as Brandywine ran out to a nine-point lead through six minutes. The Lions led by as many as 11 points during the opening period and held an 18-9 edge through 10 minutes.

The visitors cut the Brandywine lead to just two with 3:18 on the second-quarter clock, but Taylor Mims (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) knocked down two free throws, Abigail Adorno (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Lehman) added a free throw and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) sank a layup to push the Lions' advantage to 29-22. Berks recorded a layup and a free throw during the final 53 seconds to close within 29-25 at the half.

Brandywine's lead was just one point with 8:15 to play in the third period; however, that is as close as Berks would get. The Lions reeled off 11-straight points, capped by Journey Handy's (Delmar, Md./Delmarva Christian) triple, to lead by 12 just five minutes later.

The Lions held a 10-point edge entering the fourth quarter and allowed Berks to close within six, but Kemp and Mims answered with back-to-back baskets. Loper sank four free throws during the final 40 seconds to secure the victory.

Kemp paced the Lions with 15 points and 18 rebounds, tied for the eighth-highest, single-game total in program history. Mims shot 8-of-8 at the free throw line and contributed 12 points, while Robinson and Loper both tallied nine. Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) chipped in nine rebounds and four assists.

Brandywine limited Berks to 26 percent shooting from the field and forced 23 turnovers. The Lions also held a commanding 57-44 edge on the boards, including 20 offensive rebounds.

Brandywine travels to Ursinus Monday night for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
