Defense Keys Brandywine’s 70-44 Victory At Berks
READING, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine forced 36 turnovers as the Lions wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 70-44 women's basketball victory at Penn State Berks on Monday night.
The Lions netted 31 points off Berks' miscues and amassed 25 steals. Brandywine also dominated inside, outscoring Berks 40-24 in the paint, while limiting the hosts to 31 percent shooting, including a 2-of-11 mark from three-point range.
Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) flirted with a triple-double, recording 18 points, 16 rebounds and six steals, all team-high totals. Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) added 10 points. Both Watson and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) recorded four steals.
Loper, Ashley Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) and Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) shared the team lead with four assists each, while Journey Handy (Delmar, Md./Delmarva Christian) knocked down two triples and posted eight points.
Brandywine closed the first quarter with eight-straight points, including back-to-back Kemp layups during the final 30 seconds, to lead 20-12 through 10 minutes.
The Lions continued to run away, scoring the first nine points of the second period as the margin swelled to 29-12. Brandywine's defense held the hosts scoreless for 6:03 during its 17-0 run.
Kemp's layup with 1:52 to go in the first half extended the Lions' lead to 20 points for the first time. Abigail Adorno (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Lehman) sent Brandywine into halftime with a 41-20 edge after canning a triple just before the buzzer.
Brandywine controlled the final 20 minutes, never letting its lead dip below 21 points during the duration of the second half.
Brandywine (5-16, 4-5 UEC) plays three of its final four games on its home court beginning Wednesday against Penn State Harrisburg (7:30 PM).
